The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) released regulations to implement the existing Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010 by expanding options available for collecting controlled substances for the purpose of disposal. These regulations will allow manufacturers, distributors, reverse distributors, narcotic treatment programs (NTPs), hospitals/clinics with an on-site pharmacy, and community pharmacies to administer mail-back programs and maintain collection receptacles. Participation is voluntary. The rule also expands the authority of authorized community pharmacies to voluntarily maintain collection receptacles at long-term care facilities.
